The 940 series was introduced in 1990 along with its only other 900 series comrade, the 960. Both the 940 and the 960 came as a four door sedan as well as a 5 door estate and were available with mostly the same features. As a direct successor to the 740, the 940's engines included three different engines, all 2.3L and four straight cylinder . Three different versions in the 940 series were available the GLE, the turbo, and the SE which was a high end trim coupled with the turbo engine. Two years before its true end the 940 as well the 960 had their name changed to the S90 and V90 (S for sedan and V for wagon) to mimic the letter-number system used on some of Volvo's other models. In 1998 the S90 and V90 (the last of the 900 series) were discontinued, the 940 name ended in 1995.

Rims on the 940 were all 15" or 16" alloy wheels except for one 17" alloy rim with silver finish and 5 spokes and a 15" steel wheel with painted finish and 15 spokes. The remaining wheels were finished in silver, machined, or silver with a machined lip and spoke patterns included 5, 10, 15, 20, and even a diamond spoke pattern was available on both 15" and 16" alloy rims.
