Nissan's Leaf premiered in 2010 as Nissan's first all electric car for the public market. Built on Nissan's EV platform designated for all electric vehicles (created for and currently only used by the Leaf) it is a five door hatchback and has front wheel drive. The Leaf utilizes a lithium ion battery that has 24 kW•h and is powered by an 80kW synchronous motor that can handle highway driving- a bit of an obstacle in all electric cars. The Leaf has made quite a name for itself in the few years it has been in production, claiming the Green Car Vision Award, 2011 European Car of the year, 2011 World car of the year, and Car of the Year Japan accolades. The Leaf continues production today with research and development ongoing for future models.
