The Kia Sorento began as a midsize SUV in 2002 and later became a midsize crossover with its second generation that began production in 2009 for a 2011 model year. The main difference between the two generations was the fact that the first was built on a truck based platform (making it an SUV) while the second generation was created on a car based platform (making it a crossover). Apart from the dramatic body change the two generations were very similar, both were available with a straight four gas or diesel engine with the option of a V6 (only petrol), as well as both including the option for four wheel drive as an alternative to the rear wheel drive. The second generation was, however, the only generation with a six speed automatic or six speed manual transmission. The Sorento continues production today with a facelift scheduled for 2014.

Wheels on the Sorento ranged from 16" to 18" with all the steel wheels being 16" with painted finish. The remaining alloy rims were finished in silver, chrome or machined and had 5, 7, or 10 spokes.
